March is National Nutrition Month… a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored annually by the American Dietetic Association. The campaign is designed to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits... and March 12th through 18th is National CACFP Week.
To help with nutritious diets, here are some great resources:
- Dole 5 A Day "5 A Day is the magic rule -- more is OK, less is uncool!" This site is a celebration of the important health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. The graphics are so bright and compelling, it's impossible not to begin craving a fruit or veggie snack.
- Kidnetic An educational program of the International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation, Kidnetic.com is designed for kids nine to twelve and their parents. The site is divided into four sections. Move focuses on "wet head games," you know the kind that require you to leave your computer chair and actually run around and sweat. Eat is a compendium of kid-friendly recipes. Talk gives you a chance to provide feedback, but requires free registration. Learn is a collection of short articles for grownups on topics such as how to eat healthy in fast food restaurants.
- My Pyramid is from the US Dept of Agriculture about the food pyramid.
- Nutrition Explorations published by the National Dairy Council, combines fun with simple nutrition instruction.
- Kids Nutrition from North Dakota State University contains links to provide fun, educational opportunities and information to both children and adults.
- BAM Nutrition from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has some good nutrition information. (By the way, BAM stands for Body And Mind.)
- Education World also has some great links to information about children and nutrition.
- The Child Care Nutrition Resource System provides recipes, resources, and information about making nutritious meals.
