Earth Day 2009...
Earth Day will be on April 22nd this year. What is Earth Day? Earth Day was created to broaden and diversify the environmental movement worldwide, and to mobilize it as the most effective vehicle for promoting a healthy, sustainable environment through a combination of education, public policy, and consumer activism campaigns. More than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest secular civic event in the world. Earth Day 2009, April 22, will mark the beginning of the Green Generation CampaignTM! This two-year initiative will culminate with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010.
How about some ideas to celebrate Earth Day?
Kaboose and Amazing Moms have some great craft and activity ideas. We shouldn't talk about crafts and activities without mentioning DLTK Crafts... one of the best. You can download (or order) a free coloring book from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).Visit the Teacher's Lounge at the Wilderness Society for a variety of age appropriate activities, ideas, and additional resources.Tons of stuff at Planet Pals website. What? You have never heard of Planet Pals! Check it out, the kids will love them.We have talked about KidThing in the past... Again this year, they are offering a free digital copy of Dr. Suess's The Lorax, to celebrate Earth Day. If you use a computer in your child care, this is a great (and kid-friendly) program to have.Though more for older kids, TeacherVision and ABC Teach both have some ideas and printables for younger children as well.Want to share some eco-friendly ideas with the children? Check out the Family Education website.Read a book written by a first grade class about Earth Day.Look for Earth Day events in your area. Or better yet, create your own block party. Besides, I've always believed that despite what Kermit says , it is easy being "green" in child care. Where else can you use things that most people throw away to make craft "treasures" that parents will feel obligated to keep pinned to their refrigerators for years?
There are lots of ways to celebrate Earth Day. I'd love to hear about some of your ideas and resources.
