National Library Week...

Well it's Monday, April 3rd, and at last there is some sunshine. The way April started out, I was beginning to believe that the
flowers would be extraordinary in May or we would need to look into building an ark.

We already know that the Week of the Young Child started yesterday, but did you know that April 2nd through the 8th is also National Library Week?

National Library Week 2006 marks the sixth year of The Campaign for America’s Libraries, a multi-year public education campaign sponsored by the ALA (American Library Association) and libraries across the country to speak loudly and clearly about the value of libraries and librarians in the 21st century. More than 20,000 libraries in all 50 states are being reached by @ your library®, The Campaign for America’s Libraries.

How about celebrating both Week of the Young Child and National Library Week by taking the children in your care to the library? It makes a great field trip. For many years, I have taken the children that I care for and gotten them library cards at our local library. I occasionally take them to the library for story time, and let them check out books. It is a treat for the children and a way to encourage their parents to become more involved in early literacy. Teaching a child to love to read is one of the most important and greatest gifts that you can give them. A libarary card is a passport to world unknown, mystical places, imaginary trips as well as knowledge and wisdom.... its fun and good for you too...

If you are interested in learning more about the importance of early literacy for young children, and if you live in Minnesota, inquire at your local CCR&R about taking the S.E.E.D.S. of School Readiness and Early Literacy Program. This is an excellent series of seven 2 1/2 hour sessions for adults that care for 3 to 5 year old children. SEEDS was designed to give child care providers information about how to create a literacy rich classroom or home for 3 to 5 year old children.
